Hemp oil and CBD oil are two common ingredients in the skin care industry. Both are gaining popularity, especially since CBD became federally legal in 2018. These two oils are derived from the same plant, but have significant differences. It is important to understand the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil so that you can choose a product that is right for your skin care needs.

Hemp Oil

Hemp oil is extracted from hemp seeds. It has been on the market for many years. While it is derived from a Cannabis plant, hemp oil does not contain any CBD or THC (THC is the psychoactive compound found in marijuana.) It has a variety of uses including cooking, and skin care. Hemp oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, making it excellent both to ingest, and to apply to the skin. It has long been viewed as a beneficial anti-inflammatory. In skin care it can be applied to soften the skin without clogging pores and causing acne. Hemp oil is often used as a safe carrier oil for other essential oils.

CBD Oil

CBD oil is derived not from the seeds of the hemp plant, but the plant itself. It can also be taken orally or applied to the skin. It is rarely used in cooking, but can be used as an additive in supplements or foods designed specifically to deliver CBD orally. CBD has historically been more regulated than hemp oil and can contain tiny amounts of THC. However, it must have less than .3% THC to be sold legally. Cannabidiol is used to relieve joint pain, inflammation, regulate mood and more. CBD is considered a supplement and therefore is not regulated by the FDA. However, the FDA prohibits sellers from making specific claims about supplements, so in that affect CBD is more closely regulated than hemp oil.

Common Confusion

Both CBD oil and Hemp oil offer many benefits and are often even used in conjunction with one another. However, hemp oil typically costs less than CBD oil. An article from Well and Good points out that because of this many sellers mislead buyers and use marketing to make hemp oil look and sound like CBD oil so they can sell it at a higher price. Read product labels closely. Hemp oil can also be labeled as cannabis sativa seed oil. Hemp oil is an excellent and helpful ingredient, but it is not CBD. If you are looking for CBD and the specific benefits of CBD, be sure CBD or cannabidiol is listed in the ingredients.
